Upgrades (Operating System)

Upgrade Methods
Primarily there are three methods for upgrading your Operating System (OS) listed here in descending order of preference...
  1. Create a new partition on your primary disk, install the new OS, reinstall those applications that you use and transfer the data associated with those application (eg. Outlook email files) across.

This is the best way as you end up a clean version of your new OS with only those applications that you actually use. This will ensure that your new OS runs optimally. You can also dual boot back to your old OS should you ever need to and at some later date, when your happy with your new OS, you can remove the old partition. Dual booting is handy for comparing how things used to work against how they work now. Can be handy for fault finding.

  2. If your new disk isn't big enough to hold a second partition, backup the entire disk onto another disk, remove the old OS, install the new OS, reinstall your applications and tranfer data from your backup.

This is almost as good as option 1 above, however you can't dual boot to your old OS.

  3. Backup your entire disk, and run the upgrade option from your new OS DVD.

This is the least favoured option as the upgrade may be compromised by conflicts with installed applications. Also you'll still retain applications that you rarely use with associated services and background tasks consuming resources.

OS Upgrade options

Windows 95,98 or ME
If you're running any of these then probably the best advice is to buy a new machine. None of these Operating systems are supported any longer and given that they're so old, it's almost certain that the machine they're running on will not support XP or Vista.

Windows 2000 or NT
If you're running either of these then upgrading to XP is a fairly straight forward process. The only issue is that you won't benefit from the new directory structure which places user profiles in
c:\Documents and Settings rather than c:\winnt\profiles. Not a big issue but worth bearing in mind.

You cannot upgrade either of these operating systems to Windows Vista.

Windows XP
Upgrading XP to Vista is a straight forward enough process providing the upgrade is possible to start with. Not all versions of XP can be upgraded to any version of Vista.

Windows XP Professional No No Yes Yes
Windows XP Home Yes Yes Yes Yes
Windows XP Media Center Edition No Yes No Yes
Windows XP Tablet PC No No Yes Yes

Run Microsoft's Vista Upgrade Advisor to see which version of Vista you can upgrade to.

If you choose to run an upgrade on your existing OS rather than a new install as discussed above then...

  1. Backup your current system (preferably take a copy of your primary partition)
  2. Remove any excess from your hard disk (ie. Uninstall applications you never use, Run disk cleanup to clean out temporary files and folders etc.). Archive data you haven't used in a long time. The less junk you have lying around the smoother the upgrade process will be.
  3. Uninstall or at least disable any antivirus, spyware and third party firewalls you've got running.
  4. Defrag your hard drive.
  5. Run the upgrade from within windows. You can't boot off the DVD if you're upgrading.
