Upgrades (Hardware)
Upgrade options for Desktop PCs and Laptops are very different. Laptops
The only components that can be upgraded on a Laptop are Disk Drive, RAM and CD/DVD drive. If your CPU or graphics card is not powerful enough then you either have to purchase a new Laptop or select the appropriate version of Vista to work on your current laptop.
Desktop PCs
Just about everything in a desktop computer can be upgraded. Depending on budget you can upgrade your PC to suite which ever esion of Vista you require.

- PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required; Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
- 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
- 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space. (Minimum). Actual requirements will depend on the features you want to install.
- Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
- CD-ROM or DVD drive
- Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
Minimum Windows Vista Hardware Requirements
To run a bare bones Windows Vista environment you will need:
- 800 MHz processor and 512 MB of system memory
- 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
- Support for Super VGA graphics
- CD-ROM drive
NOTE: Although all versions of Windows Vista can run on this system configuration, many features will be disabled.
Recommended System Requirements
Vista Home Basic
- 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 512 MB of system memory
- 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
- Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory
- Audio Output
- Internet Access
Vista Home Premium
- 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 GB of system memory
- 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
- Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
- WDDM Driver
- 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
- Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
- 32 bits per pixel
- Audio Output
- Internet Access
- Additional requirements to use certain features
- TV tuner card required for TV functionality (compatible remote control optional)
- Windows Tablet and Touch Technology requires a Tablet PC or a touch screen
Windows Vista Ultimate
- 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 GB of system memory
- 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
- Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
- WDDM Driver
- 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
- Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
- 32 bits per pixel
- Audio Output
- Internet access
- Additional requirements to use certain features
- TV tuner card required for TV functionality (compatible remote control optional)
- Windows Tablet and Touch Technology requires a Tablet PC or a touch screen
- Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption requires a USB Flash Drive and a system with a TPM 1.2 chip
Windows Vista Business
- 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 GB of system memory
- 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
- Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
- WDDM Driver
- 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
