There follows a list of free applications for those of you who don't want to spend a fortune on maintaining and protecting your PC/Laptop. The majority of these are cut-down versions of the full applications but generally they provide ALMOST the same level of functionality.
Spyware protection
Spyware Doctor (Starter Edition) - Part of Google Pack
Lacks the full array of real time protection monitors possessed by its commercial big brother but still offers some active protection along with full scan and remove capabilities, scheduled scans, and free signature file updates.
Windows Defender
- Realtime protection with automatic updates and scanning.
Not quite as comprehensive as Spyware doctor. Uses a lot of processing power which may affect computer performance. Already built into VISTA. Download required only for XP users.
Antivirus
AVG Antivirus - Realtime protection with automatic updated and scanning.
Firewall
Comodo Firewall Pro - Amazing and FREE!!
Trojan Scanner/Remover
AVG Anti-Spyware -
The free version of AVG Anti-Spyware is actually the same as the paid version but after 30 days the active protection (i.e. memory monitor) becomes non-functional, automatic updates are disabled (you can still update manually) and kernel level self protection is turned off.
Rootkits
The term rootkit is used to describe the mechanisms and techniques whereby malware, including viruses, spyware, and trojans, attempt to hide their presence from spyware blockers, antivirus, and system management utilities.
